HMT Warrior Trail System
The Hatfield-McCoy Warrior Trail System runs 65 miles across 4,000 acres in McDowell County, West Virginia, at elevations from 1,400 to 1,900 feet: positioned in the southernmost part of the HMT network near War, West Virginia, the state's southernmost incorporated city. The Warrior system offers primarily intermediate difficulty on hard-packed, forested terrain: the trails are well-maintained with a solid gravel and clay base, minimal technical rock features, and limited water crossings compared to the wetter bottomland systems to the north. This makes Warrior an accessible, confidence-building system for riders stepping up from beginner terrain who want consistent mileage and solid footing. The location in McDowell County is practically advantageous: War's commercial center is within riding distance of the trailhead, providing direct access to fuel, food, and lodging without loading the trailer, a genuine convenience in a region where services are often scattered. The Warrior system connects to Pinnacle Creek, Indian Ridge, and Pocahontas for a combined rideable network of 265+ miles from the same annual permit. ATVs, UTVs, and off-highway motorcycles are all permitted on designated routes. Annual HMT permit: $26.50 (WV residents) / $65 (non-residents). Year-round, sunrise to sunset.
